Tim, some people do use earthbags for the foundation. The key to earthbags is to fill them FULL, pound them tight, and interlock them well. Not sure if we had this technique down during the workshop, but I would encourage you to look into earthbag books for more information on earthbag foundations.

Though I have failed to remember most of the people at Bluerock Station, I have met some fun folks. I have been researching my contacts for the past 10 years and it is amazing how many people have been involved with some of my projects. Your tours and workshops have touched a lot of people and maybe some have not gone completely "sustainable", I am sure that they have taken up practices like recycling, biking, walking, growing and just basic conservation.
I watched an interview with people talking about renewable energy vs coal, oil, nuclear or gas and the gotcha question was "are you practicing what you preach?" Some testified that they had solar systems on their houses, etc. I feel that there are many ways to go green and it doesn't have to cost money. This falls into the thought of the Thanks for Nothing. We have to first start thinking and talking green. Actions start with looking at an aluminum can and thinking and talking about what it took to make that can and what a waste it would be to toss it into a landfill, using the southern window on your house to heat the room, turning down the heat, growing herbs, stop smoking for health, walking for appointments from work instead of driving 5 blocks. The list could go on and on and on. Talking to your friends and casual aquaintances is a start and then the little actions that can make a difference.

Personally I think that using batteries is the same as electricity. Jay's reasoning is that the battery recharges during the day when he has to use his laptop so it doesn't count. He's mainly interested in the experiment of not using money. I want a deeper experience so I am not using any form of energy except during the day my computer is turned on because I have to have it to run our business. I even have an old-fashioned phone that I use, which drives Jay nuts because he can't take it off to talk on it. I'm doing my best to adhere to what I've promised myself. I don't think this is like the Sabbath in that we continue to do work and we do not prepare food the night before because we can't cook on the day of rest. I haven't left the farm for 21 days but next Tuesday a friend is picking me up (ride share) to go to a dinner together. Do you think I am breaking the rules in doing this - I'd like to know? Nans says the real learning comes from trading and sharing things instead of money changing hands. I'm trying to put all what I'm thinking and learning into some perspective for the my life. Thanks for writing.
